How Much Do You Know about Your Driver Face?
Are you aware of where the hottest or sweetest spot on the face is? Do you know that the consequence of hitting the ball ¼" above the sweet spot is almost certainly much less than hitting it the same distance below the sweet spot?
With most modern Drivers, if you are going to miss the height of the sweet spot, it is much better to miss it above. The ball speed is reduced less and the spin rate is not increased dramatically. The result is that you will get further down the fairway than if you miss below.
I have watched Driver technology improve radically. It used to be that many people didn't use a Driver, but now it's easier to use than a #3 or #5 Wood. That's because they've found ways to make the club stable on miss-hits (so your shot doesn't deviate left or right as much); to reduce spin (so for those that slice across the ball, there is less impact) and to make the fall of ball speed, when you miss the sweet spot, much less.
And, if you can invest in creating a good turn, solid weight movement and good hand speed while hitting the sweet spot from a good swing path and angle of attack, then you'll hit the ball further. Remember that as your PGA Professional my role is to help you improve your game through structured coaching sessions. So to hit it longer, click here to arrange an assessment.
